Well, it’s possible there’s some idolatry lurking in there somewhere, but I’m more worried that if I buy it, I’ll use it while the novelty factor is there, and then I’ll never use it again. I’ll see if my mum’s laptop gets continuous regular use over the next few weeks.

I had a friend who spent far too much on some hi-fi, felt guilty about it, and so made an extra-large donation to church to make up for it! phariseeism or what?

I too have this urge to buy things sometimes. I suspect it is a kind of idolatry. I subtly think that the object will make me happy, and it might, of course, a bit. But, the thing is not to be depending on the object for happiness. God gives us good things to enjoy with thankfulness. If the object produces thankfulness in us, that is a good sign, if we fear its loss or depend on it for happiness, those are a bad signs.

It’s a young cosmos that is rather tricky. All those stars in M31, clearly visible despite being 2.3 million light years away. Paul hasn’t really got any answers to that one, only speculations.

Hmmm. Jealousy in the Bible means something different from in modern usage. God is jealous for his own reputation and glory. This means that he doesn’t want to share them with anyone else. This is a different meaning from the modern usage where the word ‘jealous’ means “I want something of yours.”

Great verse. When people edit hymns they tend to lose the best verses because they disagree or don’t understand, e.g. last verse of Amazing Grace:

Speaking of celluloid, did you know that there were films constantly being shown at the Cheltenham Bible Festival, e.g. Apollo 13? Questionnaires were distributed before each showing to allow viewers to reflect on certain features of each film.

The Carey BC jazz band was also quite fun (this was pure entertainment, not the worship, music group!)

Well, I was about to type in a blackmail note when this irritating paper clip thing popped up and announced: “Hi, I’m your office assistance; it looks like you’re starting to write a blackmail threat”.
