“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” Is 6:3

The bible tells us God is holy. He is holy in that he is pure and set apart from his creation. He cannot look upon sin. Even the sinless seraphim cover their faces and cry out “Holy, holy, holy”. How much more as sinful beings should God’s holiness be apparent to us?

If we are Christians, we should also be holy.

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Pe 1:15-16

Whilst we may not be perfect in this life, we should strive to be. Not that we could in any way justify ourselves, but because God’s Holy Spirit lives in us and works in us, making us holy.

As Christians, we are in a spiritual battle against sin – both within and without.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Cor 10:3-5

This battle is not fought physically, but spiritually. Looking at how God told Joshua to prepare his men for physical battle against Canaan we can see the principles of battle, both spiritual and physical. God promised Joshua the land of Canaan, he got them to pledge themselves to him and to secure God’s provision for them in the promised land. By his Spirit, we are equipped for battle with his promises, we are called to pledge ourselves to him through baptism and then to secure those things which God has given us to strengthen us.
